You can also control the rotation speed in the case of 3 pin fan connectors but the thing is that they are up to some extent and not as automatic and accurate as much as 4 pin fans. Similarly, as the processor shifts to light work, the voltage and RPM of the fan slow down automatically. For example, if the processor is busy with heavy work on the computer the 4 pin fan increases the voltage in order to control the temperature. PWM fans i.e 4 pin fans simultaneously control the voltage of the fan. There are four differences between 3-Pin and 4-Pin Fan connectors. Now let’s see the difference between 3 pin and 4 pin fans. I hope you got clear of 3 and 4 pin fan connectors. In other words, the longer the voltage is applied to the fan motor coils, the higher the rotational speed and vice versa. It adjusts the RPM using a PWM signal and simultaneously provides tachometer feedback. I have tried several codes from previous posts ( ), but the only thing I am able to get out of it is 0 rpm, no matter what the fan speed actually is. I also verified that the sense pin is outputting 5V in this setup using a volt meter. I have attached a jpg of the the setup I've been using. ![]() So far, I have been able to somewhat control the fan speed by varying the duty cycle on the PWM pin, but I would also like to be able to measure and output the fan speed in RPMs. I am using a 12V, 4 pin (+12, ground, sense, control) Arctic F9 PWM fan (specs: Motherboard Form Factors) with my Arduino Uno. I know topic has been covered a lot on this forum, but I have read through many of the previous posts and have not been able to solve my problem. ![]()
